New Elements Gallery is honored to welcome Wilmington artist James L. Williams to the gallery. Williams, who currently is a professor of design at Cape Fear Community College, combines his formal art training from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro with his fascination with cartography and architecture to create contemporary mixed-media art. Reminiscent of Wasily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, he approaches his practice as an artist, designer, and map-maker to combine vibrant, layered color and multiple dimensions to recreate the places he visits. James begins each work by exploring the world around him and taking photographs of buildings, outdoor environments, and interior spaces that inspire him. Working primarily with acrylics and collage, these images projected onto a blank canvas animate the initial graphite strokes that transform into his large-scale mixed media “maps” of experience.

James’ New Elements Gallery Debut,¬†Making Maps: A Revisit, opens on May 25th and runs through June 16.
