Sharon Ely

SharonElypicBorn in Mobile, Alabama, Sharon moved to California at an early age. She spent her childhood daydreaming and playing in creeks and canal areas, watching dragonflies and light on water. Moving to Coastal North Carolina in the late 60’s, Sharon felt she had finally “come home.” The water, sky, and clouds presented an even more perfect place to daydream and paint. She attended UNC-Wilmington completing the B.A. in Creative Arts and went on to graduate school at UNC-G for her M.F.A in Painting. Her professors there took her deeper into observation and color interaction. She was a weaver for 15 years and then began working in hand marbled silk. Deepening her love of color interaction, she began working with painting on textiles in 2012. Her textile works and paintings have been shown in various museum shops and galleries including the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, S.E.C.C.A. in Winston Salem, and the Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington.

Artist Statement

“I have always been influenced by nature; the ebb and flow of tides, the rhythm of rain, early morning birdsong. This new series of hand-painted textiles is called “Passages,” and reflects the quiet and sometimes tumultuous beauty of the water, clouds, sky and ocean here in our coastal region. I am especially interested in how air, space, and atmosphere combine and change in kaleidoscopes of color and light.”
